Draft Belfast City Council Equality Action Plan 2017-21

Closed 7 Mar 2017

Opened 13 Dec 2016

This draft Equality Action Plan runs from April 2017 until March 2021, and contributes to our compliance with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998. It is also a plan which outlines how we will address the key inequalities in our ambitions to create a city in which people love to live, learn, invest, work and visit.

The draft Equality Action Plan 2017-21 will help us understand the diversity of our communities. The prosperity and cohesion of all people and communities can be affected by age, gender, marital status, if you have, or have not, a disability or dependents, religious and/ or racial background, political opinion and sexual orientation. It is also important to understand the different needs within communities, for example there are many forms of disability, and like the other Section 75 characteristics, every individual straddles all of the groups in some way, with great differences, as well as similarities between socio-economic groups.

In developing this draft Equality Action Plan 2017-21 we have listened to key stakeholders through engagement with local communities and organisations working to address inequalities, so that we can better understand their needs. This formal twelve week consultation period allows us to present the draft actions and outcomes we have designed to begin to address those needs.

The relevant documents are available, on request, in alternative formats - Braille, audio, large print, easy read. The council will also consider requests to produce it in other languages. If you require the documents in these or other formats please contact us:

Why we are consulting

At this time of significant change in how we carry out all our functions across the city, we have extended the current Equality Action Plan 2015-2016 to 31 March 2017 to allow for improved alignment with other related plans, including the Community Plan and Corporate Plan.

Our plans for how we aim to address inequalties across the city are outlined in this draft Equality Action Plan.  There are a variety of questions on the following pages which we would appreciate you responding to.

We will hold focus groups at the City Hall on Monday 16th January 2017, there will be two sessions at 2.30 and 5.30 (the format will be repeated so there is no need to attend both).

Consultation on the draft Community Plan, called the Belfast Agenda, will open shortly.

What happens next

This consulation has now closed.

All responses will be considered and a final action plan will be presented to council for approval.  The final action plan will then be published on our website.
