What do we hope to achieve?

We want to create a welcoming, safe and accessible shared space by creating a new signature civic space with improved access, recreational facilities and environmental enhancements.

This is the first step in our plans to reconnect communities stretching from Glencairn to Bog Meadows by creating a necklace of shared space.

What are the proposals for the Dam and Park?

  • Improved access to and around the site
    • A new, enhanced entrance to the Dam
    • Upgrades to the existing entrances to the Park
    • New car parking, including accessible parking spaces
    • A new pedestrian bridge across the Dam, connecting the Dam and the Park
  • Improved recreational facilities:
    • New fishing stands along the east bank of the Dam;
    • A circular pathway for quiet, scenic views of the city, and also for jogging, walking and exercising around the Dam
    • A new modular building in the Park that will  provide a year-round meeting place for schools and community groups
    • A dedicated outdoor space that will enable fairs and community events to take place
  • Environmental enhancements
    • Create new floating islands and wildlife planting that will provide additional habitat for birds and wildlife
    • A new viewing area to provide a place to take in the vista across the city and information panels that will outline the history of the Dam
    • New lighting and fencing throughout the park to help ensure an attractive and uniform look

This project is supported by the EU's PEACE IV Programme, managed by the SEUPB. The redevelopment of Springfield Dam is funded by Department for Communities.
