As part of our £105 million Leisure Transformation Programme, Templemore Baths will benefit from a £17 million investment. We've been awarded £5 million funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards this project to restore the building to its former glory and extend to provide new facilities.
Our Leisure transformation Programme is a unique opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of our city, by delivering a quality service that meets the needs of our communities.
The redevelopment of Templemore Baths forms part of a £40 million investment into leisure provision in east Belfast. Work is currently underway on the new £15 million Robinson Centre, where the focus will be on aquatics. Once this facility is open, we will start work on the £8 million redevelopment of Avoniel Leisure Centre, where the focus will be on outdoor leisure provision.
Templemore Baths is the last surviving Victorian Public Baths in Ireland in a largely original form and one of very few across the UK giving it national significance.
The aim of the project is to create a sustainable, long term leisure facility that will preserve and enhance the surviving original features of this landmark building and extend to provide a modern-day spa and leisure facilities.
Situated in a working class area of east Belfast retaining powerful associations with the heavy industrial heritage of the shipyard and manufacturing industries, this proposal also offers the opportunity to attract visitors to the baths and connect them to the wider context of the city’s architectural, industrial and social heritage.
Agreed Facilities
Following consultation with local community groups and statutory organisations, and on advice from a range of industry experts, we have taken the decision that the new centre will focus on heritage preservation, spa provision and increased swimming provision.
